財布が寒い (saifu ga samui)

Here’s a new word of the day! Although, it’s an expression rather than a word: 財布が寒い (saifu ga samui). This expression quite literally means “My wallet is cold”, another way of saying “I’m broke”. Quite a strange way of putting it, wouldn’t you agree? But the origin is actually quite interesting. Can you guess why this means you are broke? Leave your guesses in the comments below!

*hint : What’s the opposite of 寒い? ^ ^
