My friends and I decided to have a カレーパティー (curry party) the other day. Now usually when you hear curry, you instantly think India. And although it originated in India, and was introduced to Japan through the British at the end of the Edo period, today curry has actually become one of Japan’s staple dishes, and is quite dissimilar in taste with its Indian counterpart.
You’ll notice that Japanese curry tends to come in blocks, rather than powder, although the powder version does exist. But these little blocks of curry are much simpler to prepare. The curry will often be prepared with a type of meat (chicken, pork or beef) as well as a variety of vegetables (potatoes etc). Now I’ve already said that Japanese curry tastes different to Indian curry, and it’s not just because of the type of spices they use. Let’s not forget that Japan is a country with over 100 Kit Kat flavours (I mean really who would’ve thought wasabi would work as a flavour), as well as sakura lattes, and lots more interesting flavours! So guess what kind of curry we made?! If you can read Japanese, or looked carefully at the picture above, you will see that we made a honey and apple flavoured curry! You’re probably thinking “how could anyone ever mix apple and honey in curry?!” But trust me…it was good! We cut up some vegetables to go with it and cooked the whole thing in a giant pot.
Of course, we had rice with out curry sauce. とても美味しかったよ^ ^
And to finish off I had a nice cup of green tea 😀
