Yesterday I went to my usual Japanese-English meetup, except this time we had a television crew come interview and film us. It was an interesting experience, but I can safely say being in front of a camera is not for me!
One of the questions they asked me was “what is your favorite Japanese word?” You’ll already know from this blog and my “word of the day”, that I have a lot of favorite Japanese words. But when put on the spot, the only thing I could think of is a word I’ve heard my friend use quite a lot, and which I’ve really come to like recently: あららら (ah ra ra ra).
Well, it’s not really a word, but more of a sound. Depending on the situation, tone and how many “ra”s you add, it can mean different things. For example あらっ “ah ra!” expresses surprise. You could translate it as “oh my!”. And あらららら can be used when hearing more troubling news. A bit like “ah la la” in French. You could also use it like in this video:
I guess this is just one of those random words that can’t be explained, and just need to be heard and felt :p And why I like it?? I have no idea!
