ほんま

When I went to a Japanese-English exchange the other night, I had the pleasure of meeting someone from the Kansai region of Japan. If you’ve read a few of my previous posts, you’ll know I love kansai-ben (kansai dialect)! I don’t really understand kansai-ben, so the person I was speaking with was trying to speak in standard Japanese, even though I really wanted him to speak as he normally would! But as we got conversing, force of habit kicked in when he was surprised to hear I liked Arashi and exclaimed in bewilderment: 「ほんま!?」 honma is the equivalent of hontouni (in standard Japanese), which means “really”. I’m really considering adding this to my vocabulary, but I think it would sound funny if it was the only kansai-ben word I used :s あかんあかん…

If you don’t know what kansai-ben sounds like, here is a video from one of my favorite anime, Lovely Complex, which is set in Osaka, and all the characters speak in a kansai dialect.
