四 – 祭り

I’m very excited about Japan Matsuri happening in london again this year, but how I would love to go to a matsuri  (festival) in Japan!

There are many festivals all around Japan, each at different dates and different occasions. A lot of them will relate to the changing of the seasons, the rice harvest, and nature. But others also include cultural themes, music etc. Although different cities may have different festivals, there are a few main ones celebrated all over the country. Such as tanabata, hanami or hinamatsuri.

Matsuri will always have several food stands (usually serving takoyaki…yum!), games such as 金魚すくい kingyo sukui (goldfish scooping) or water balloon yo-yo, and 花火 hanabi (fireworks). It is also an occasion for many young Japanese to wear traditional kimono or yukata (a summer kimono).
